Door to door selling. (Get off my porch!)

Is it easy to sell your product/service/business on a one call, cold, door to door sales call?
No.
Is it easy to sell your product/service/business at a trade show?
No.
Is it easy to sell your product/service/business?
No.

(I'm getting you used to hearing the word 'No' already.)

Door to door sales is something everyone has an opinion on, many have attempted to do and only a small group of those who have attempted it, succeed at it.  Here are the need to knows to be successful when selling door to door:

Have Confidence.
If you feel like you don't have the right to be there, your prospect will smell it from a mile away, and nine times out of ten he or she will cut you off and slam the door in your face. You do have the right to be there. Sales make our economy go. You have to make a living. Some of the people living behind those doors might well be in sales themselves. You will find rude people, but you will also find friendly people and people who are simply neutral.

Play the Numbers Game.
Sales is the one place where the law of diminishing returns actually works. The more people you see, the more chances you give yourself to sell. The more chances you give yourself, the more likely it is you'll actually do it. You won't get killed by rejection, because you know you have already done the work necessary to move on and do what you have to do.  The hardest part each day is the first door, followed by the next 5 or 6.  After that, selling becomes a contact sport in which you’re guaranteed to win – the more people you contact the better you do.

Work Smart.

Door knocking doesn't work when the people you're trying to reach aren't going to be home. At 11:00AM on a Monday your prospects are busy at their jobs, so you may as well find other uses for that time (like appointments, or paperwork, working referrals or whatever). Instead, the best prospecting times are in the evenings as people start to get home from work till about 8:30 at night. Always stop at 8:30, it's rude to knock on a door any later. Weekends are the other key times, with Saturdays being the best.

Expect Success!

Door knocking can seem harrowing at first, but the more you practice the less it will intimidate you. After a while, cold calling can even be fun! It is a definite rush when you score those sales, when you stop worrying if you will sell and simply do the activities that it takes to sell you will find you become unstoppable.

Loose Lips Strengthen Ships

Did you ever get picked last for kick ball? If not, did you feel badly for the kid who did? Or course! Most people want to be accepted, most people want to belong. In a small business, using this to your advantage is a key competitive edge. Be honest with your key people, make your goals, their goals. If times are tough and your business needs a cash influx, be honest. You will truly see who is in the fight and who is not.

Motivate your people with facts, not fiction or pipe dreams.

There is nothing better than knowing where you stand. There is nothing more comforting than separating those who will fight with you to the end and those who will not.

Knowledge is power. Be open, be uniquely loose. Loose lips with strengthen your ship, on the way up and when it is taking on water.

Complete Success.

'She is so successful.'

'He is such a successful guy.'

'That company really worked for their success.'

You thought of money didn't you? Piles of money? Nice cars? Houses on the water or on golf courses? Yeah me too. For the last quarter century I've been programmed to equate success to money. They are synonyms in the mind of the average person. Like love and marriage - wait, it's 2012, you can in fact have one without the other. Success is boring in comparison to what I'm discussing here. Complete Success, I imagine, is great.

What is Complete Success? I have no idea. I just know having a decent bank account is not success, at least not for me. Money cannot buy happiness or health, and I'm pretty sure those last two intangibles are more synonymous than success and money. With people dying all around me lately and the C-word* being throw around like feces in a monkey cage, I started doing some soul searching. You see, Complete Success, as I am referring to it, is a state of bliss without ignorance.

I imagine it is the time when you hit every red light and it's quite alright. The time when you auto forward your email to a trusted colleague and watch Seinfeld reruns without a care in the world. Complete Success is pulling up to a driveway and being so happy to walk inside that home to see your stuff, cat, dog, wife, kids or whomever. Complete Success isn't measurable. It isn't even real to anyone but you. I imagine it is something like having third stage syphilis. Euphoric, free, loving and bright.

Today I've decided to deepen this journey I am on and strive for not only a fat wallet, but a trimmer waist line, lighter heart and brighter smile. Complete Success is subjective, that's the good news. The bad news is, Complete Success is in all probability going to be a big pain in the succASS.

See you at the gym.

Personal vs. Professional.

The whole theory of staying 'professional' in today's business world is, for the most part; bullshit. People who need to remain professional and speak professionally are:

a) People who do not belong in the position they are in. These are the people who put their time in a certain business or industry and have a great title, but bring no new ideas or motivation to the table. They compensate for their incompetence by trying to 'sound' like they know what they are talking about.

b) People who represent a terrible product or service. After reading this, you'll notice one thing: Some of the best looking and sounding marketing materials you will see - come from the most boring, un-innovative people in the business world. These are the same people who will send you emails that are paragraph after paragraph of garbage, buzz words and bullshit. My favorite business people are always to the point and direct.

When was the last time you saw Tom Brady tell one of his receivers, "Wes Welker, I must say that is one of the finest completions we have seen in this organization in quite some time. Your annual review will be undoubtedly positive if you keep that up."

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!?!?

Your 'organization' is a team. Teams thrive on structure and motivation.

Be a Brady, not a Boob. Reward people on a human or personal level. Stop focusing on 'trying to be more professional' and focus on being more personal. People buy YOU. Not your business acumen.
